Let a thousand “describes” bloom… or not.

So, this week I've been doing the same thing I do every year... try to take over the world create a web version of my company's annual report. It sounds fairly tedious but is actually usually a pretty fun project since I have to take graphical layouts and convert them to a web layout. It's also a great chance to try doing some layouts and the like with CSS, as we only support newer browsers on the HTML version. If not for having to support Internet Explorer, it would be the sort of thing that every web designer/developer type dreams about. ;) But at least I only have to worry about IE5.5/6 or so.
While I was doing up the page, there was one thing that caught my eye, and it's something I've seen in press releases too: the usage of "describes" as a verb. Sure, it's technically correct, but I swear, it just looks weird to me. You get stuff like this:
"Our new frobulator will allow our workers to gnarfle the garthok over 65% faster," describes Fred Flintstone, CEO of Paleolithic, Inc.
Honestly people, what's wrong with a nice simple word like "says"? Have we gotten that desperate for words that imply some greater sense of action? I don't get it.
And no, this entry did not have a point. :)
